The concept
About the collection.
Space
I wanted to paint something new. Something without a comparison. “Nothing new under the sun” took me to space. That which is between things. That which is between what we know and what we don't know. That which makes the world larger. That which continues in all directions without having a center. That which resembles nothing but is everywhere. A vast nothing to relate to.
Metaphors and space
Something you didn't know is explained with a metaphor, you feel it in your body when it “falls into place”. What was unknown becomes known and the world is suddenly larger. Something has been taken from the unknown and made the known larger. At the same time, the unknown remains inexhaustible. Metaphors create space. Maybe that's what physicists mean when they say that space is infinite but at the same time expanding. Space can be built from metaphors, but metaphors can also be built from space.
Organic patterns
What is a world without beauty? You recognize beauty instinctively. It just feels right. If it is organic it's familiar on a bodily level. There is no need to dissect it for you to understand, it strikes you before thinking. Let your eyes wander freely and be inspired. Not like when you read an inspiring quote but rather like after a while in a beautiful forest. As you are inspired by the dreams you don't remember.
Life
Paintings that inspire, not just once inspired. You should not get used to it, if this works my paintings are inexhaustible. Alive not static. Variation as the light shifts and your mood swings. Around the planets orbit moons. Moons that consist of the background, behind the planets. What is outermost is at the same time innermost. Poles without comparison. A metaphor for opposites. To help you be in two places at the same time. Like deep truths have equally true opposites. Like accepting quantum physics or living next to someone who doesn't think like you. Of course, nothing can land in space, but you can because you are no thing.
The Borderland
More space. A belief in something bigger. When you create something new, something you don't know, you make your world bigger. Imagine your world is a bubble. Go to the edge of the bubble. Stick your head outside the bubble and see plants you've never seen before. Now you recognize these plants. Wherever you see the same type of plants, you recognize yourself. You feel at home. Your world got bigger. One foot inside the bubble and one foot outside the bubble. This is the borderland. Something new you recognize.
Touching with your eyes / Feng Shui
Some who suffer from cortical blindness still react to visual stimuli, in the form of activity in the amygdala. When I heard this, it struck me why feng shui is real and why I am calmed by nature. There are patterns, shapes, and contrasts that we react to before we see them. For example, one might jump away when a snake appears in the lower field of vision, before one actually “sees” that it is a snake. My paintings are both for what you see with the eye and what you feel when the world touches your eyes. They should give the room a sense of life, depth, and space.
